IT’S ILLEGAL TO DISCRIMINATE AGAINST A PERSON ON THE BASIS OF THEIR AGE. HOWEVER, THIS PREJUDICE IS HARD TO PROVE – ESPECIALLY IN THE WORKPLACE.
Despite the 2006 EU Employment Framework forbidding employers from passing up people for jobs based on their age, it seems those who don’t possess a youthful appearance are still missing out on roles, promotions and career opportunities because of their looks. That is, until now.
According to a report, the more mature demographics are looking to get a leg-up in the job market by levelling the playing field with the help of plastic surgery. It’s particularly being used in the United States, where those above a certain age are turning to procedures such as facelifts to knock a few years off their appearance.
Doctor Grant Stevens – president-elect of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery – explained: “They don’t want to look older because they wear their resume on their face.” He added: “What if you’re 50 years old and you’re looking for a job and you’re competing with a 25 or 30-year-old? What if you’re 45?”
The ASAPS has previously found that the number of people having cosmetic surgery over the age of 65 has more than doubled in the past two decades. In addition to this, 75% of those aged between 65 and 75 are completely new to going under the knife.
Geriatrician Bill Thomas has argued: “People are making a calculated decision, trying to escape the stigma of ageing and buy a little time, be in the world and not be sidelined because of their appearance.”
So what’s the most popular procedure for those over the age of 65? An eyelift ( Upper Blepharoplasty & Lower Blepharoplasty ). All in all, this treatment was performed on over 39,772 patients over the age of 65 in America in 2015.
