Plastic surgery has nothing to do with plastic. The word actually comes from the Greek word plastikos which means to mould or shape, which describes perfectly the different cosmetic procedures you can undergo nowadays. ADVANCES IN MEDICINE

Dr. Warren Breidenbach, a leading surgeon at the University of Arizona, developed technology which allowed the first ever hand transplant to take place. The patient had lost their hand 14 years prior to surgery in a firework accident and the surgery took over three years to plan. It was successful and since that operation in 1999, 85 people worldwide have received hand or arm transplants thanks to the pioneering surgery.

THE GENDER GAP

Often cosmetic surgery is perceived as a female dominated pursuit, but this is not the case, with men rapidly catching up with women on the number of procedures they’re undergoing each year. For many men, their self-image also impacts their work life and with high flying jobs, they want to look and feel the part. The name Chanelle McCleary might sound familiar because she’s previously taken part in Ex on the Beach on MTV. The brunette has only been living with the other housemates for a matter of days but already she’s told them – as well as the rest of the nation – all about her history of going under the knife. During a recent episode on Channel 5, she didn’t mince her words as she spoke freely about splashing out £10,000 on her transformation.

She explained: “I had an operation only two months ago. My bum, I had that Brazilian bum lift. They took fat out my double chin, my back, my tummy and put it in my bum.” In addition to her Kardashian-esque bottom, Chanelle has treated herself to a pumped up pout and a wrinkle-free face. She added: “I’ve got filler in my lips. I had to get it dissolved it were too much. I tried Botox in my forehead. I liked it. I don’t really need it.”

Of course, you don’t have to be a celebrity – or on the verge of becoming famous – to undergo plastic surgery. This is a growing trend that is being seen, especially when it comes to Big Brother. For example, last year contestant Lateysha Grace had already undergone a bum lift before she stepped through the doors of the reality show house. One area of her body Kylie has openly said she has enhanced through cosmetic procedures is her lips. Whilst she initially tried to deny it by saying she simply used lip liner over her natural lip shape, she eventually decided to admit her extra-plump lips were down to collagen fillers. Now arguably her most famous asset, she has built a lip gloss and lipstick empire to show off her fabulously full lips.

CHEST TO IMPRESS

Kylie has denied ever having breast enhancement surgery, claiming a Victoria Secret push up bra is her secret for larger-looking breasts. The outfits and swimwear she wears, however, would add to disputes of this claim, as her breasts still keep their enhanced size when the miracle bra is nowhere to be seen. Like older sister Kourtney, it seems quite likely that Kylie has also invested in breast enlargement surgery.

FORMER EASTENDERS ACTRESS DANNIELLA WESTBROOK HAS OPENED UP ON TWITTER ABOUT HER PLANS TO INVEST IN SOME COSMETIC PROCEDURES THIS YEAR.
